Looking after a disabled spouse, and the resultant stress of doing so, raises the risk of stroke significantly in the caregiver, according to a study published in Stroke in January. Researchers studied the measure of strain on conjugal caregivers, correlating it with the Framingham Stroke Risk Score, and found high strain to be associated with a 23 percent higher risk of stroke. The highest risk group was African American men, who saw a 27 percent increased risk of stroke over 10 years.
