The 2011 White House budget allocates $290 million to federally backed community health centers, which a recent report in Health Affairs say can provide quality care for relatively low cost. According to study researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago, every $500,000 in funding provides treatment for 540 underserved or uninsured patients. Community health centers are projected to serve 20 million people per year with the increased funds.
